A web-based application for dairy farmers and consultants to aid decision-making in the choice of herbicide to control giant buttercup in a paddock

Purpose

This application uses data on the herbicide responses of giant buttercup (Ranunculus acris), pasture grasses and clovers (Bourdôt et al 2019) combined with user-inputted data to aid decision-making in the choice of herbicide for controlling the weed in dairy pastures.

Mowing as an option is under consideration and may be added when efficacy data from Sustainable Farming Fund Project SFF405187 is available

This tool estimates the net financial benefit from a proposed herbicide treatment for giant buttercup in a paddock.
It requires input values for:

  • Giant buttercup cover
  • Pasture eaten
  • Cost of herbicide and application
  • Pasture dry matter conversion to milksolids
  • Stocking rate
  • Herd lactation length
  • Clover content
  • Pasture utilisation
  • Cost of fertiliser
  • Milk solids payout
